Plans to complete the transformation of the iconic QE2 cruise liner into a luxury floating hotel are well underway according to Dubai Drydocks World, with the ship scheduled to leave Dubai to begin restoration work in Asia by October 18, 2013.

The project, dubbed “The QE2-New Life”, will see the ship reach Singapore on November 1 where she will stay for three days before proceeding to Hong Kong for another three days, thereafter leaving for an as yet unannounced shipyard in China.

Once in China, the ship will begin its transformation into an all suite hotel with suite sizes varying between 60 and 150 sq m, with some larger suites intended for long stay residences.

Dubai Drydocks World chairman Khamis Juma Buamim said: “Some really deep thought and strategic management planning have gone into this project.

"We have moved forward in a holistic and calculated manner in order to ensure that the product positioning is correct, the brand name is strengthened and the implementation and the execution taken to complete the project is simple, realistic and cost effective. Rest assured that a lot of work has been done in preparing the vessel for the next stage."

A range of international design houses have already been approached to submit design proposals for the hotel renovation, with all submitted designs to be placed on the dedicated ‘qe2hotels’ website where public opinion will be invited to choose the best design.
