Dubai-based Jumeirah Group has donated 50 used laptops to an orphanage and school in Nepal as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

During the recent Eid Al Adha holidays in October, a team of 12 Jumeirah employees and their friends took 23 laptops to the country, while additional machines were flown via an international delivery service.

The laptops were donated to 20 children in Iris Nepal Children’s Home, and 30 students at the United Scholars Academy. Over a two-day period, the Jumeirah team provided training sessions on basics as well as an introduction to the internet and Microsoft Word.

Tikka Ram, director of United Scholars’ Academy, which provides free education for 380 students, said: “Before the donation, all 380 students shared just one computer. We will never forget the volunteers or Jumeirah.”

In addition to being a part of Jumeirah’s corporate social responsibility strategy, the initiative also reflects Jumeirah’s commitment to reduce electronic waste. The project extended the lifecycle of the laptops by recycling and donating them to the less fortunate and encouraged the staff to help those in need.
