W Doha Hotel and Residences has been awarded the Green Key certification, making it the first hotel in Qatar to receive the environmental label.

The Green Key certification is an eco-label for tourism and leisure establishment s that fulfil a list of requirements, demonstrating the hotels' responsibility for their surroundings and community. The certification is recognised globally as an international standard for business in the tourism and leisure industry and reflects voluntary commitment of the company

The criteria for the award is judged across a number of factors, including a list of environmental requirements covering a wide range of standards, from environmental demands, availability of action plans, education and communication.

Over the past year, the hotel has hosted several environmental sustainability initiatives such as ‘Make a Green Choice’, beach clean-ups, and recycling projects in the hotel and staff accommodation, which have resulted in a 100% increase of plastic, paper and cans being recycled from August to December 2013.

W Doha general manager Safak Guvenc said: “We are honoured to be the first hotel in Qatar to receive such a commendable award and hope to set an example for the hospitality industry in the region. We will continue to work on initiatives that drive awareness around green issues and ensure that we are aligned with Qatar’s 2030 national vision of transforming it into an advanced country, whilst adhering to a highly sustainable approach.”

“The Green Key marks a step in the right direction for W Doha’s ongoing commitment towards environmental sustainability within the hotel, the local community and on a global scale,” he added.
