Dubai World Trade Centre has awarded British firm Al-Futtaim Carillion the main contract for first phase delivery of the Dubai Trade Centre District (DTCD), a 146,000m² development to include a 588-key hotel.

Phase one of the development, located between the current Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre and Emirates Towers in the city’s Central Business District (CBD) will begin in April 2014 with a scheduled completion date of Q3 2015.

DWTC director general, department of tourism and commerce marketing and CEO, Helal Saeed said: “The Dubai World Trade Centre has always been a core enabler of business tourism for Dubai. The District development justly complements this current proposition, offering a premium destination that will serve as a networking and commercial hub for the international business community.”

“The technology solutions and infrastructure being planned as we roll out additional phases of our masterplan will highlight alignment of these initiatives with the Dubai Government's Smart City strategic agenda launched by Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.”

The appointment of Al-Futtaim Carillion, a joint venture company between the UK’s Carillion and United Arab Emirates-based Al-Futtaim Limited, came after competitive tender.

Carillion chief executive, Richard Howson, also welcomed the appointment, citing the emirate as a core market for the British company’s expansion plans in the region. He commented: “We are delighted to have been selected for the first phase of this major development in Dubai, where we continue to see more opportunities coming to market for which our capabilities and reputation for delivering to high standards of quality, safety and reliability are important to customers.”

The contract is worth approximately AED375 million (£61.4 million). An operator for the hotel will be announced in the coming weeks.
