Laundry manufacturer Electrolux Professional has become the first company in its field to introduce a laundry system that meets the criteria required by Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, or HACCP, which provides safety validation for equipment used in the food industry.

Cross-contamination and related foodborne illnesses are currently major issues in the food processing industry, both for consumer health and for the company profitability.

Electrolux Professional has developed, Line 5000, a new range of laundry solutions that meet the HACCP’s strict criteria. Next to front load washers, barrier washers, ironers and fitting solutions have been awarded the accreditation.

According to Richard Mallett, managing director of HACCP Europe, the new range has been designed to “ensure nothing can go unsanitised”. The products are 95% recyclable, energy efficient and combine technology with cost reducing features.

Mallett commented: “The Certification Electrolux Professional has been awarded is usually reserved for food service equipment only so this is a milestone development for the manufacturer. It re-affirms the crucial role laundry equipment can have in contamination control.

“Traditionally food manufacturing factories have had to outsource their laundry to guarantee cleanliness but the certification of the Electrolux Professional Line 5000 range has provided the option to invest in an on premises laundry with complete peace of mind.”

Eugenio Filoni, global segment manager special on premises laundries Electrolux Professional said: “There are numerous examples of food contamination through non-food input including the laundry flow in a food processing plant. Last year was quite eventful for recalls of food and beverage products, from meat to cheese by some of the biggest companies in the industry. Reasons range from metal and glass contamination to Listeria findings.”

According to the 2013 European Recall and Notification Index, last year were more than 5,000 product safety notifications, 58% of which were within the food industry.
