Marriott International is to provide free Wi-Fi to all members of its loyalty programme from January 15 – but only if they book their stay directly through the company.

The free standard Wi-Fi at more than 3800 hotels around the world will be available to all 47 million members of Marriott Rewards, as long as the booking is made directly on Marriott.com, Marriott’s mobile app, 1-800-MARRIOTT, or through a Marriott hotel.

It will be available at hotels under the Marriott Hotels, JW Marriott, Renaissance, Gaylord Hotels, Autograph Collection, AC Hotels by Marriott, Marriott Executive Apartments and The Ritz-Carlton brands.

Edition, Moxy, Courtyard, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Springhill Suites, Residence Inn, Towneplace Suites, and Marriott Vacation Club all already provide free Wi-Fi.

“Marriott Rewards members asked for free Wi-Fi, and we answered,” said Marriott International executive vice president and chief marketing and commercial officer Stephanie Linnartz.

“Free Wi-Fi is a meaningful way to reward our most loyal customers and continue to attract next-gen travellers.”

Marriott Rewards Platinum and Gold Elite members will continue to get free enhanced Wi-Fi, where available, while other members will be able to upgrade for a fee.

The operator has said it will continue to honour commitments with accounts and groups with negotiated agreements.

Marriott was last month fined US $600,000 by regulators in the US after one of its hotels used Wi-Fi blocking technology, meaning guests had to use the property’s own internet service.
