Members of the Starwood Preferred Guest loyalty programme are to get free Wi-Fi at participating hotels – as long as they book they stay through one of Starwood’s digital channels.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide is to offer the free internet access from February 2, and travel professionals will also be able to extend the offer to clients when their stay is booked through SPG Pro.

“With the seismic shift towards digital, particularly when guests are on the road and literally mobile, our SPG members believe high quality Internet access is a basic necessity right up there with a great bed,” said Chris Holdren, senior vice president, SPG and Digital at Starwood.

“Offering free in-room Internet access just relieves one more pain point in the travel experience and recognizes our loyalty to SPG members who travel with us.”

The free Internet access will be available to SPG members who book their hotel stays through Starwood’s digital channels, including its corporate and brand websites and mobile sites, as well as the SPG app.

According to Starwood, the SPG app has seen the fastest growth in bookings across SPG’s digital platforms, up nearly 60% in the last year. Overall, it claims its digital channels have seen more than 10% growth.

With this latest move, Starwood is following in the steps of Marriott International, which recently announced that it will provide free Wi-Fi to members of its Marriott Rewards programme, as long as the stay is booked directly through the company.
