The developer of the second Crowne Plaza Hotel in Oman, set for completion in the capital Muscat in 2016, has set out some of the property’s green credentials.
Oman Tourism Development Company this week announced that L&T Oman LLC, a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro Limited, had won the tender for the turnkey construction of the four-star, 300-room hotel at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC).
In line with the state-owned company’s sustainability policies, the hotel has been designed to achieve a gold rating accreditation under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard.
Measures set to be put into place include the use of Solar thermal hot water heating, LED fixtures in rooms and public areas and healthier indoor air quality for the occupants.

“The construction of the Crowne Plaza was awarded to L&T Oman based on their score in a comprehensive evaluation carried out by the project team, and subsequently approved by Omran’s main tendering committee and board,” said Omran’s CEO engineer Wael Ahmed Al Lawati.
“The evaluation considered the capability of the bidding firms, proposed execution methodology as well as their demonstrated commitment to Local Development.”
Located 10 minutes from Muscat International Airport, the new Crowne Plaza hotel will have rooms junior and executive suites and a presidential suite spread across seven floors, as well as a ballroom, executive lounge, all-day dining restaurant and executive restaurant.
Set to be completed in late 2016, it will also have a two-level basement car park to accommodate 270 vehicles.
L&T will be responsible for civil works, architectural finishes, MEP works, external works and landscape. The works will be supervised by local consultant Ibn Khaldoun Al Madaen in collaboration with Jordanian Architect Arabtech-Jardaneah.
Omran said a socio-economic impact study had indicated that the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre project will contribute up to RO 230 million (US $597 million) annually to the GDP by 2030 and generate 15-30 thousand direct and indirect jobs.
It is also set to create opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses in destination management, retail, F&B, transportation, security, and other fields.
