Luxury hotel operator Mandarin Oriental has released a statement confirming that its credit card systems have been hacked.

A number of hotels in the US and Europe, but none of the company’s Asia hotels were impacted by the unauthorised cyber-attack.

The company released this statement: “Mandarin Oriental can confirm that the credit card systems in an isolated number of our hotels in the US and Europe have been accessed without authorisation and in violation of both civil and criminal law.”

Mandarin Oriental said that it worked with forensic experts to remove the malware, which went undetected by the hotels’ anti-viral systems.

“The Group has identified and removed malware and is coordinating with credit card agencies, law enforcement authorities and forensic specialists to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to fully protect our guests and our systems across our portfolio,” it said.

“We take the protection of customer information very seriously. Unfortunately incidents of this nature are increasingly becoming an industry-wide concern and we have therefore also alerted our technology peers in the hospitality industry.”

The company claims to have executed additional security measures, details of which have not been released.

The breach has affected credit card data only. Other personal guest data, and credit card security codes have not been compromised, the company said.

Mandarin Oriental is encouraging individuals who have stayed at their hotels to contact their credit card providers directly if they suspect any unauthorised activity.

The forensic investigation is still underway and Mandarin Oriental cannot yet confirm how many hotels were impacted or how much data has been stolen.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group last year confirmed it will manage a luxury resort in Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach area when it opens in 2017.

The resort, which is currently under development and will mark the group's debut in the Middle East, will feature 200 rooms and suites and 12 over-water villas accessible via a private beach, and with its own infinity pool.
