Teams at Marriott International hotels in the UAE raised AED 217,555 (US $59,000) for colleagues and their families affected by the recent earthquake in Nepal.

The UAE Marriott Business Council HR team organised associates across the company to donate one day of their monthly salary or any other amount for the cause.

Within a few weeks, the 12 hotels in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as well as Marriott’s regional office in Dubai has raised the amount.

The donations were distributed among 77 employees to assist them in rebuilding their homes and providing food and shelter to their families in Nepal.

Ramahari Karki demi chef de partie at Marriott Hotel Al Jaddaf, was among the employees who received the donation. He said: “I used the money to build a temporary shelter for my family. We lost almost all of our belongings and it has been very important to buy basic cooking items and food for my family to survive.

“Our plan is to rebuild a simple basic home after the monsoon season. The donations have greatly helped me to plan and prepare for the future. I would like to thank my friends and colleagues at Marriott. Without your help it would have been so difficult to manage everything.”

The donation campaign reflected Marriott’s “Spirit to Serve our Community” initiative. In addition to the monetary donation, several hotels also collected items such as food, blankets, and hygiene products to be sent to Nepal via the Emirates Red Crescent.
