The properties are judged on criteria such as water and energy usage, expanding waste recycling facilities and promoting the use of renewable energy and eco-design. Planet 21 programme also encourages employee growth and use of locally sourced products.

Discussing the award, Novotel Abu Dhabi general manager Dominique Mercier said: “We pride ourselves on taking an active approach each and every day in tackling a broad spectrum of environmental and social developmental challenges, whether it’s using energy-saving light bulbs, removing endangered seafood from our restaurant menus, recycling food waste for compost or engaging supply chain partners in our sustainable development strategy.”
