Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence team evacuated 570 pilgrims from a hotel in Makkah following a fire in a property situated on Ibrahim Al-Khalil Avenue.

It took firefighting units hours to put out the fire in the 14-storey hotel, local media reported.

The fire had started in a room on the seventh floor and spread to other parts of the hotel, officials told Arabic daily Al-Riyadh.

However, authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze.

Islam’s holiest city and home to millions of pilgrims arriving for annual Hajj, has suffered several incidents related to stampedes.

Last September, around 2,236 pilgrims were killed in a stampede – the largest death toll in the city so far.
