The Ramada Dubai hotel in Bur Dubai, operating in Dubai for 33 years, is scheduled to be demolished in September 2016, with August 31 fixed as the last day of operations.

Speaking exclusively to Hotelier Middle East, Abjar International CEO Abdellah Essonni revealed that while the decision was a difficult one, the property could not be refurbished.

He said a mixed-use development will be built in its place, including a five-star hotel, residences and a mall. No decision has been made yet on the operator of the upcoming hotel.

Another decision that needs to be taken is with regard to the 135-foot high (41m-high) stained-glass mural in the high atrium of the property. Essonni revealed it cannot be used in the new project due to its specifications, and is on the hunt for suggestions on what can be done with the structure.

The mural covers a width of 28 feet (9m), and was featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest stained-glass structure in the world. It was created by British firm Goddard and Gibbs' John Lawson, who passed away in 2009.

The staff at the property will be relocated within the company, with hiring at sister properties focusing on talents available in this hotel.

People who have been to Dubai since 1983 will recognise this hotel as a long-standing landmark - so much so that the area around it was casually referred to as the "Ramada roundabout area".
