Sustainable best practice has become a hot topic among housekeepers in the region.
According to the Hotelier Middle East Housekeeping Report 2016, only just over half of hotels (58%) are eco-accredited by certifications such as LEED, Green Globe and Green Key.
This suggests that the other 42% still have some way to go to improve the sustainability of day to day operations at the hotel.
Bearing testament to this, a staggering 91% of respondents involved in the Housekeeping Report admitted that they think their hotel could do more to reduce its utilities costs.
Perhaps more alarming, almost a quarter of the housekeepers surveyed said that they do not even look at their utility bills in order to track costs.
Sustainability in housekeepering was one of the keenly debated topics, at the Hotelier Middle East Executive Housekeeper Forum, held earlier this year in May.
Here, Radison Blu Residence Dubai Marina room division manager Anushya Paramasivam suggested that two routes to success in this area are, firstly “educating guests” on how their choices impact the environment, and secondly educating staff in order to make “sustainability part of the daily routine”.
