Local media and residents in Abha, Saudi Arabia, have urged the city's municipality to launch a ‘plane-restaurant’ project that has been in the pipeline for three years.

The project was proposed by the Asir Municipality to promote domestic tourism, reports Saudi Gazette, with the body of a Boeing 747 set to be used as an F&B outlet.

The aircraft is reportedly being stored in Umm Al-Rakb, north of Abha.

In February 2015, former Asir mayor Ibrahim Al-Khalil said the project would be awarded to a contractor that had offered to build the restaurant but work didn't commence.

Since then, acting mayor Ali Hasniya has said that the municipality still plans to implement the plane-restaurant project, in order to attract visitors to the city.

Abha has been hailed as 2017's Capital of Arab Tourism by Arab Tourism Organisation with dozens of investment opportunities intended to be offered in the Saudi city to help attract investors.
