What is your earliest tea memory?

At 15 on a blind tasting, guessing the name of the garden that could have produced that tea.

How did you become involved in the tea industry?

In search of freedom and desire to experience hardship.

In your opinion, what makes Newby Teas a premium product?

Mine and my team’s dedication and commitment to preserve the tea art, heritage and culture. This an expression of gratitude to my teacher.

What are the biggest challenges in the tea industry?

Greed as well as ignorance of the tea history, and mass production with no concept of quality. This has allowed many nobodys to try and become somebody with no capital, but false marketing.

Can you detail some of Newby Teas’ ethical and sustainable initiatives?

We have our own intelligence database of the gardens we buy our teas from, and every tea bought by us and packed has to pass through a lab test, confirming product conformity and selection in accordance with EU-prescribed food and safety standards.

What are some industry trends that you’re seeing emerge?

Internet at large is creating curiosity of the consumers to understand the difference between false and true marketing, history of tea and the concept of quality over quantity. People have started realising, that good can’t be cheap but cheap can’t be good, and they are alert of the greedy wolves in ships clothing.

Do you have any new product launches coming up?

Each day is a day of innovation. We always do things which have not been done for the last 100 years, in an honest and dedicated manner. We are currently proposing to launch heritage teas of some of the finest quality which are not marketed by so call international brands for the deserving clientele, who understand the difference between good and bad products.
