Matthew Frost. Matthew Frost.

Spinneys has appointed Matthew Frost as chief executive officer, effective January 2018.

With a career in retail spanning over 20 years, Frost comes to the business with extensive experience and excellent results as director of B2B and commercial operations at Waitrose UK.

Frost cut his teeth as a stock controller in the fresh meat department of Asda and, over the next fifteen years, went on to gain experience in a variety of roles across the organisation, covering commercial, distribution, stock management and marketing. This culminated in a sourcing role for Asda’s parent company, Wal-Mart, serving its international division in Bentonville, USA, and Shenzhen, China.

In 2010, Frost joined Waitrose UK as Head of Grocery. Following a successful five-year tenure, where he developed Waitrose UK’s grocery business to a turnover of over £1bn, Frost was promoted to Director of Commercial Operations. Most recently, he has also added Business to Business to his wider remit, which has seen him developing the Waitrose brand both domestically and across 58 international markets.

Speaking about his new role, Frost said: “I’m incredibly excited to join the Spinneys team. Spinneys has that rare combination of a passionate customer base, quality produce, amazingly talented people and momentum in the market. I’m excited for the challenge ahead and very much looking forward to getting stuck in and seeing what we can achieve together as we build on the next phase of the company.”

After 15 years at the helm, Spinneys chief executive officer, Jannie Holtzhausen, will step down from his position as CEO in January 2018. Holtzhausen has played a critical role in the development of Spinneys since taking on the role of CEO in 2002. Under his tenure and leadership, Spinneys has grown from seven stores to almost 70 stores today under the brands Spinneys, Waitrose, Al Fair and Taste Kitchen.

Holtzhausen will take up a corporate role with the Albwardy Group following his departure, however, will continue to chair the executive team at Spinneys whilst also overseeing the recently launched agricultural business.
