Spinneys has introduced a new traceable labelling system. Spinneys has introduced a new traceable labelling system.

Spinneys has partnered with leading agricultural assurance organisation GlobalG.A.P., to introduce a new labelling system to provide customers with traceability on the food they are purchasing.

The trial, which will initially be on a selected number of stone fruits, will see a GlobalG.A.P. Number (GGN) label added to applicable products showing the origins of the food, resulting in farm to fork transparency.

Shoppers simply need to visit the GlobalG.A.P. microsite link shown on the GGN product label (www.ggn.org/spinneys) to discover information about the farmer that has grown that particular food, or watch videos on the growing process, giving them a unique insight into how the food they are buying, and subsequently feeding to their families, has arrived on the shelf at Spinneys.

Commenting on the launch, Spinneys CEO Matthew Frost said: “We are, and always will be, committed to providing the very best produce to our customers as we know from recent accompanied shops that this is hugely important to them. The launch of the GlobalG.A.P. Number initiative is a big step for us in our mission to provide great value, high quality sustainably sourced-products in our stores, served by knowledgeable staff focussed on delivering brilliant customer service.

We truly believe this new partnership is a great way for our customers to build even greater confidence in our sourcing methods in a unique way that other retailers in the region cannot do. I am looking forward to seeing and hearing how our customers use it.”

Global G.A.P. CEO Kristian Moeller added: “Spinneys is uniquely positioned in the UAE, in a separate market, and a high quality player, which provides a perfect test market for us. We are happy to welcome the commitment to transparency and sustainability of a strong partner as Spinneys”, said Dr. Kristian Moeller, CEO of GlobalG.A.P. "This step supports the GlobalG.A.P. certified farmers to present their engagement for sustainability to consumers in a transparent way.”

Spinneys is the first GlobalG.A.P. retail member in the Middle East, signing up to the assurance programme in 2015 with a commitment to ensure sustainable sourcing practices across its stores. The global organisation is a flagbearer for the implementation of good agricultural practices and sets voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products around the globe with a promise for a sustainable future.
