AccorHotels’ senior vice president for talent & culture across Middle East & Africa Rachel Moosa, who has been with company for nearly 17 years, sat down with Hotelier Middle East to share essential tips for fresh hospitality school graduates on how to successfully get through what are often nerve-wracking job interviews.
1. Have a great attitude
Moosa says it’s always a good first impression when a candidate comes to an interview with a positive attitude as it sets the tone. “Wake up, have a smile on your face,” Moosa believes.
2. Be punctual for the interview
To add to the previous tip, Mossa says it’s important that the candidate arrives on time for the interview which reflects the candidate’s interest for the job.
3. Know the hotel
“They need to have done some research about the property and the company, know who the manager is, and see what promotions have taken place in the past,” explains Moosa.
4. Be open-minded
Moosa says it’s always helpful when a candidate is ready to understand the various job roles within the hotel he or she might have to undertake in different circumstances and needs to be open-minded for that.
5. Ask questions at the end of the interview
Moosa says this is one of the things that’s vital to end the interview on the right tone. "When they ask no questions, it shows that they’re not really engaged," she points out.
According to Moosa, some of the questions that candidates should not hesitate to ask at the end of the interview include: Tell me more about your graduate training programme; how do I grow to become a general manager someday; what are some of the plans for Accor in the future; and can you tell me about some of the alumni who have gone onto senior positions.
“Anything that shows interest is great,” asserts Moosa.
