Hotel owners in the Lake District, UK, are being asked to offer accommodation to holidaymakers for free to help encourage tourists back to Cumbria following the devastating flooding that took place at the end of last year.
The Lakes Hospitality Association has put forward a scheme encouraging hoteliers to offer an allocation of rooms for free on five Sundays in January and February, according to a report in the News & Star.
In exchange for taking part in the scheme, hotel owners will receive free advertising in regional newspapers.
Lakes Hospitality Association chairman Jonathan Denby told the paper he was “happy to donate all of my 128 bedrooms in my hotels” for the scheme.
“It is vital that we get the message out that the roads are clear, the shops are open, the attractions are waiting and the hotels are ready,” Denby said.

“In other words, the Lake District is fully prepared to accept visitors once again. I would like to urge all hotel and guesthouse owners to forget the bottom line for a few weeks and join in this promotion, which in the long run will provide us with a dramatic and much- needed boost.”
Properties taking part in the scheme are looking to take advantage of additional revenue through F&B outlets and extended stays.
Organisers said the campaign was designed to reinforce the message that the Lake District was open for business.
