Hospitality and tourism companies in Oman are looking to counter perceptions that Ramadan is a time not to visit the country.

With Ramadan moving into the summer holiday season, businesses are looking at ways of counteracting and potential dip in visitor numbers.

According to InterContinental Hotels Group area director of sales and marketing Oman Daniel Norman, while Eid was “an exciting consideration”, he said the “magic” you could feel in Oman during the religious period was something to highlight and promote.

“Yes it is Ramadan, but that is not a reason not to book your holiday; maybe it is a reason to come to see something different and special,” he told HotelierMiddleEast.com.

“People really go back to their culture, family routes and traditions and even as a tourist you will really be able to feel that.”

Deputy managing director of the company behind Orient and Dollar Thrifty car rental in Oman, Al Haditha, Mehdi Jaffer said that Ramadan was definitely a special time in the Sultanate.

“It’s a great family time. The typical visitor to Oman is not about nightlife so that’s why Ramadan shouldn’t be a barrier,” he said.

Jaffer also noted that there had been a surge in rentals during Eid last year, with many visitors from Dubai and Abu Dhabi making the trip down to Muscat and to Salalah.
