Hotelier Middle East editor Louise Oakley said: “Last year, close to 100 GMs responded to the survey, which aims to measure industry sentiment and analyse hotel performance confidentially.

“This year’s survey seeks to find out the impact of the economic downturn and forecasts for recovery from those ‘on the ground’, so we are urging all GMs to spare 10 minutes to take part.”

The GM Survey will follow up on key findings from the 2009 report, which revealed that almost two thirds of GMs believed that reduced revPAR had been the major result of the crisis.

Value for money had crept up the rankings (from 46% in 2008 to 60% in 2009) in the top three factors contributing to a hotel’s success, second only to location.

And when asked about the use of e-distribution channels, almost half of the GMs last year revealed that the hotel’s own website brought in less than 10% of sales, more than 40% claimed that GDS also accounted for less than 10% of total business; and 47% of GMs saw less than 10% of their total business come through third party websites.

The 2010 Survey will follow up on all of these findings and more in order to gauge the industry outlook for the next 12 months.
