Five nominees have been shortlisted for the Hotelier Middle East Awards Green Hotelier of the Year.

With the hotel industry seeing an increased focus on environmental issues, the Green Hotelier of the Year is a much coveted title.

The Green Hotelier of the Year Award will be presented to a hotelier who has gone above and beyhond the call of duty to bring green issues to the forefront of the industry.

And the finalists are:

Tom Lord, hotel manager, InterContinental Dubai Festival City
Tom is passionate about the green initiatives he spearheads, driving them to long term goals and not short term answers, he takes responsibility for the task at hand, ensuring initiatives have returns both for the environment, and the company.

Abdul Quddus Sheikh, director of engineering, The Palace — The Old Town
Quddus has actively led and supported the strategy to ‘go green’ achieving the first Green
Globe certificate in the region, certified by the Green Globe Association, US. He has maintained 100% efficiency through correct use of the Building Management System to reduce overall wastage of electricity and lighting.

Mohamed Zeid, technical director, Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates
Through his dedication and determination to reduce the hotel’s carbon-footprint, Mohamed has at the same time helped to reduce our business’s energy costs and waste removal costs substantially.

Immanuel Williams, total quality manager, Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi
Immanuel has taken keen interest in developing ourselves as an eco-friendly brand in line with our Mission statement. It was his efforts that got us to be the first hotel amongst 75 hotels in Abu Dhabi to submit the Environment Health and Safety Management System.

Mukhtar Hussain, director of engineering. Holiday Inn Dubai Al Barsha
His dedicated efforts have helped in creating an environmentally friendly culture and reduced costs without compromising on quality. Through his able leadership he has built a strong team, which has delivered consistently with zero employee turnover, high morale and accountability towards work and owners.

The winner will be announced at the Hotelier Middle East Awards, which will be held at the Madinat Jumeirah Resort on October 14.
