A medical student gave birth on an Etihad flight heading to Minsk, according to a report in UAE-daily Gulf News.

Aminath Raushan Khaleel, 24, was with her husband heading to report to a medical college, but she went into labour mid-flight.

The pilot made a detour to Muscat, but the baby boy arrived 20 minutes before he was able to land.

The couple and their newborn were rushed to the Royal Hospital where Gulf News correspondence visited the Maldivian family.

They told the paper that they had not named the child yet, but was curious as to what “Sultan” meant.

They now have to inform their parents and find a way to get to Minsk.
