The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), which opened last November, has been cited as the leading new business driver for many Doha hotels.

“QNCC is one of the biggest new market drivers we’ve seen coming to the market. The whole MICE potential is huge,” Hafidh Al Busaidy, general manager, InterContinental Doha said at the Qatar GM Debate held on April 11.

Simon Casson, regional vice president and general manager, Four Seasons Hotel Doha added: “It’s made it better for all of us”.

However, as a record level of hotel rooms supply comes online in 2012 – over 2100 rooms according to TRI Hospitality Consulting – competition for MICE business is expected to increase.

“Competition for corporate, government, and MICE demand will intensify, especially in West Bay,” asserted Peter Goddard, managing director, TRI Hospitality Consulting.

“Sales and marketing costs will increase as hotels work to retain or increase corporate and MICE business,” he added.
