The symbolic flame of the 15th Asian Games may have burnt out, but The Torch has evolved as a trendy new destination on Doha’s hotel and culinary scene

Today it’s hard to imagine the roaring Asian Games flame emitting from the lattice shell at the top of The Torch Doha as it did during the sporting event in December 2006 — the tallest and highest positioning of a games flame to date.

After the games concluded, the gas feed was removed as the structure underwent works leading to the launch of a 17-floor, five-star hotel within the mixed-use tower in September 2011.

Its role in sporting history means that today the 300m-high tower located in the centre of Aspire Zone in Doha Sports City is more than a hotel; it is an attraction, according to general manager Gerhard Foltin.

Foltin came onboard three months prior to its launch. A Sheraton stalwart of 40 years, he previously opened one of Qatar’s oldest hotels, the Sheraton Doha, in 1982.

“When I opened the Sheraton it was instantly an attraction with its pyramid shape and restaurant on the top floor. Now one generation later I’ve opened Doha’s newest attraction, The Torch Doha — a stunning building.”

The 167-room hotel is only one component of the property. In fact since the opening, it has been somewhat overshadowed by the popularity among local residents of The Torch’s signature outlet Three Sixty on the 47th floor.
