Hilton Worldwide has launched a mattress recycling programme, with more than 85% of materials from mattresses being reused.

Part of its installation of new mattresses, it will use the Good360 scheme to identify local non-profit organisations which move materials such as the steel from springs to companies that use it for tools and automobiles.

As well as mattresses, the company will donate wood from flooring and shelving and cotton fibres, which can be used as oil filters.

"Our hotels have purchased more than 50,000 mattresses in the past two years in the U.S. alone,” said Randy Gaines, vice president, engineering operations for the Americas at Hilton Worldwide.

"This programme presents a great opportunity for our hotels globally, offers a cost savings to owners and underscores Hilton Worldwide’s commitment to further reduce our waste output."

Last month, we reported that the company had cut its waste output by 20% in three years.
