What initially inspired you to get into the hospitality industry?
I was inspired by my father, who was an architect and a passionate cook. He founded a cooking club in the Netherlands, and cooked during the Bordeaux harvest. I was impressed with his attention to detail and love of service, which inspired me to consider a job in the hospitality industry.
How has your previous work experienced inspired your management philosophy?
My management philosophy is inspired by the myriad of industry leaders, colleagues and various CEOs that I have met and worked alongside, and their understanding of the hotel industry.
Have you experienced any stand out events or moments which have shaped your career to date?
I was working in finance early on in my hotel career at which point I wasn’t sure if the hotel business would inspire me forever. But after working alongside a few stellar professionals — I felt like putting a stamp on everything I did thereafter. I vividly remember the moment I accepted the keys to the building when I opened the InterContinental Köln (Germany)... it was the most emotional and inspirational moment in my life. I was involved in all of its concepts and the fruition of the hotel’s operations was my first stint as a hotel’s GM.I truly felt the importance of what we were doing would leave a lasting impact.

What motivated you to take up a role in the Middle East?
We were well settled in Europe, but my wife made vacation plans to Dubai, and we came to discover and learn about the beauty here in the UAE and the region. I considered the Middle East to be the next logical step in my career. I achieved what I wanted to achieve in Europe, and was looking for a different challenge in my role. Also, the weather is far better in the UAE.
Where has been your favourite place to work so far, and how does that compare to your current position?
Every place that I have worked has had a special place in my heart. I can type an important life event in every property that I have worked at — my marriage, my children, making close friends.
In what ways are you planning to add to the success of your new hotel?
The Beach Rotana is an Abu Dhabi institution; a very important part of the city’s heritage. I am excited to be entering the property on its silver anniversary. The city’s landscape has changed a lot during the past 25 years; the growing market and competition make it a dynamic place. In 2016, my team and myself are dedicated to reaffirming the hotel’s leadership in Abu Dhabi, and continue its deep tradition of Arabic hospitality, accommodation and outstanding food and beverage offerings.
What aspect of your new position are you most excited about?
I am looking forward to continuing the work on establishing Beach Rotana as a dining destination with so many unique dining opportunities. Our well-loved and awarded restaurants are continuing to innovate, inspire and remain ahead of the competition; our talented culinary teams continue to stretch themselves and delight our guests’ palates. Our hotel has always been a welcome stop for many visiting Abu Dhabi, and we look forward to continuing to be the hotel of choice for those doing business with the exciting growth the city is currently experiencing.
In what ways do you feel the operation at your new hotel can be improved and how do you plan to go about that?
I have been given a huge task to run the flagship of our Rotana family of hotels, and I am excited about the new environment of ideas and changes. The hotel’s renovations, new building and updates are all transforming the thumbprint of Beach Rotana in the company’s DNA. It is my absolute privilege to help usher our hotel into her next 25 years and leave a successful legacy behind.
