Mövenpick Hotel Kuwait has received its fifth consecutive Green Globe certification in recognition of its eco-efforts for hospitality, travel and tourism industry.

Instrumental in securing this award was the 100-room hotel's sustainable product supply programme to become partially self-sufficient, which saw it cultivate more than 500kg of dates.

The low-rise hotel, located in Kuwait Free Trade Zone, partnered with a specialist agricultural company to plan the harvesting, and used its dates in its breakfast buffet; in juices; as gifts to long-stay guests; and during the Mövenpick Chocolate Hour, a signature service providing complimentary chocolate for guests.

“This new project is part of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts’ worldwide programme of green initiatives and it’s been a thoroughly enriching experience to see our latest plan come to fruition.

"A key element of the plan is to involve our employees to imbed our commitment to the company’s sustainability approach.

"The first date harvest was entirely done by our own hotel employees and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and dedication to this cause," said Hassan Hassanein, general manager of Mövenpick Hotel Kuwait.

A variety of eco-friendly products and environmentally-sound methods are employed to maintain and irrigate the area, including sprinkler and dripping systems.

The 40 date palms that delivered the first harvest were planted about 12 years ago and provided a total of more than 500 kilogrammes of dates.

The hotel's other environmental efforts include efficiently managing its energy and water use through features LED lighting, dual flushing toilets and low-flow, high-pressure rain showerheads.
