Business Travel Show Dubai event director Sally Maltby has announced that organiser Centaur Exhibitions will offset all the carbon emissions generated at the show for the second year running.

Emissions generated by venue building, courtesy transportation buses and the personal travel costs of speakers and moderators as well as event support staff will be offset by UK-based Carbon Capital Markets (CCM).

"They are working out how many flights we have got coming in, who is turning up to the show and where they are coming from, and then they will buy carbon credits on the show's behalf," Maltby told MIME.

"We hope to raise awareness of climate change responsibilities in the run up to and during the show. The Business Travel Show Dubai is committed to looking at ways to reduce its carbon footprint by cutting emissions wherever possible and offsetting those emissions that remain unavoidable."

The Business Travel Show is set to take place in Dubai at the Madinat Jumeirah from October 20 to 21.

The event was the first of its kind in the region to have offset all its carbon emissions when it launched the Business Travel Show last year, according to Maltby.

"Green issues were important last year, but not quite as important as they are now," she said.

"CCM will have a stand so they can talk to visitors about how they can offset themselves and there is also a mechanism on the website where visitors can offset their trip when registering for the event."

Maltby also said the company would consider making its press office completely paper free for the event, but highlighted the fact that that doing so could be a double edged-sword.

"If people start producing CDs and other electronic materials then it can work out more costly to the environment through production emissions," she concluded.
