AccorHotels has commissioned a study analysing the group’s social and economic impact on the countries where it operates.

According to a statement by the hotel group, the study allows AccorHotels to “identify and strengthen the positive impacts its business and hotels have in their communities as well as limit any negative impacts that may arise from development and growth of the group.”

According to the study, AccorHotel has sustained approximately 880,000 jobs globally through its hotel operations.

Within the GCC, the group has stated that it has sustained a total of 6,350 jobs in the UAE and KSA combined.

Globally, the jobs were identified in three main sectors: corporate services (laundry, cleaning, security), agriculture (as a result of its food and beverage activity) and public services (education, healthcare and transportation).

The group stated that it has created 3,000 jobs in the UAE (while supporting a total number of 4,000 jobs). In KSA, the group has created over 1,400 jobs (while supporting a total of 2,350 jobs in Saudi Arabia).

According to the study by the group, AccorHotels contributes US $24 million (AED89 million) to global GDP, which the hotel group equates to the GDP of a country like Cyprus.

AccorHotels also revealed that its operations in the UAE and KSA have contributed over US $468 million (AED1,720 million) to the GDP of both countries.

In the UAE, the contribution to the GDP is US $286 million (AED1,052 million). In Saudi Arabia, the figure is US $182 million (AED667 million).

As a result of findings from the study, AccorHotels will update its policies on ethical and sustainable best practice, and will present an updated chapter of ‘PLANET 21’ (the group’s global, sustainable development program) in Spring, 2016.
