The team at Shangri La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi have created a record-breaking sculpture made entirely out of dates.
The date sculpture represents a traditional Emirati coffee pot, known as a "dallah", and has been created “in honour of iftar”, according to the hotel.
The dallah date sculpture is five metres high, and according to the Shangri La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi, it is the world’s largest sculpture made out of dates.
It is made out of 16 different varieties of dates, including ajwa, khalas, munaify, mashrooq, sellag, wanana, rabia, and khodri. The sculpture is located in the hotel’s lobby lounge.
The sculpture took 30 team members five days to build. Hotel employees from across the property helped to build the structure, including team members from the kitchen, housekeeping, engineering, administration and front office departments.
Commenting on the initiative, hotel GM Thomas Guss said: “Dates are a long-standing tradition within the Middle East community and are widely known for their health and protective benefits. Creating this piece of art for Ramadan honours this fruit used to break the daily fast during iftar.”
