Bahrain aims to increase hotel rooms in the kingdom to 20,000 by 2018, up from 17,000 rooms at present.

Bahrain Tourism & Exhibition Authority CEO Shaikh Khalid bin Humood Al Khalifa has said visitor numbers entering the kingdom of Bahrain continue to grow each year, leading to an increasing inventory of new rooms, reports local media.

The latest statistics to be released, following a survey conducted between BETA and Informatics and eGovernment Authority, unveils plans to further promote the kingdom and all it has to offer, Shaikh Khalid said.

The kingdom reported an increase of over 1 million tourists visiting the kingdom between 2014 and 2015.

"In 2015 we received around 11.6 million tourists while in 2014 we received 10.4 million visitors," he said.

Bahrain witnessed close to 9.6 million tourists enter the country by the causeway (up 5.8% from 2014) while the airport recorded around 1.8 million tourist arrivals (up 11.62% from 14).

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are ranked top of the list of tourist source markets (61%), followed by other GCC countries (26%) and Asia and other Arab countries (13%), according to TradeArabia News Service
