The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) is launching the 2017 edition of its Can Collection Campaign with its first event on February 23.

This year, the Can Collection Campaign sub-projects include: Can Collection Day, which will be held on Thursday, February 23; and, Can Collection Drive on Saturday, October 28.

The campaigns will be held simultaneously across the seven Emirates on those dates.

The overall target for the year-long campaign is to collect 28,000kg of aluminium cans for recycling this year.

EEG chairperson Habiba Al Marashi said: "The Can Collection Campaign aims to bring people from all segments of society together to fulfill their duties to the environment of this country by giving back to nature in the Year of Giving declared by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

"The cumulative participation effort, commitment and cooperation of government agencies, hotels, private sectors, academic institutions, and families will help reach the goal of serving the environment and towards the success of attaining the ambitious target of 28,000 kg aluminum cans for 2017."

She added: "The campaign helps divert the tonnes of aluminum cans that will be collected through this specific campaign alone from the landfills and work towards achieving the overall objective of zero waste to landfills.”

The Can Collection Campaign was the first awareness programme launched by the EEG in September 1997, and has collected a total 278,672kg of aluminium cans, which has resulted in the mitigation of 4,183 metric tonnes of CO2 and saved 6,765m3 of space in the landfill.
