Despite its size and scale as the largest hotel in the UAE in terms of rooms, JW Marriott Marquis Dubai is leading the way for sustainability with a number of initiatives.

These initiatives include participation in the UAE's Food Bank scheme, recycling, employee education and training and gaining ISO 14001 certification for environmental practices.

In the first six months of 2017, the JW Marriott welcomed 782,062 food customers, a 9% increase on the same period in 2016. In support of the UAE's 'Year of Giving', the hotel has contributed 3,792kg of food to the UAE Food Bank. This translates into 39,910 meals in six months, distributed to those in need in the city.

Restaurants at JW Marriott Marquis Dubai use local and regional organic produce, in partnership with Ripe, a provider of fresh organic fruit and vegetables. The hotel uses the Safest Choice™ eggs, which are natural and fully pasteurised using a water bath and computer-controlled temperature zones monitor to assure accurate pasteurisation. This process eliminates the risk of salmonella bacteria and other viruses, making it safe even for pregnant women to consume.

Fruits and vegetables used in the hotel are sanitised with Rox Water machines, to avoid the use of chemicals. Salt water breaks down into sodium and chlorine water when electricity is passed through it, effectively cleaning the produce without the use of chemicals. Public area and room cleaning within the hotel are completed with biodegradable chemicals from Ecolab.

Even though  JW Marriott Marquis welcomed 350,410 guests in rooms in the first half of 2017, a 16% increase from the previous year, recycling efforts have improved and general waste reduced by 7%. Glass and plastic collection after major events has improved by placing new recycling bins in accessible locations. Oil consumption was reduced and the remainder filtered with VITO oil filters, making it last longer. Paper reduction is a focus throughout back of house and front of house areas in the hotel, with communications moved to digital channels.

New associates joining the team are briefed on the hotel’s commitment to sustainability during orientation; the education continues via monthly 'green meetings' and eco news, 15-minute training sessions conducted by every department and ‘green walls’ serving as bulletin boards detailing the environmental initiatives in the hotel. In the staff accommodation, recycling bins are installed and measured for progress. Electricity and water consumption are also tracked and associates get involved in community clean-up campaigns and tree planting initiatives on a regular basis.

The JW Marriott Marquis Dubai was the first large hotel in the UAE to receive ISO14001 certification, which is assessed by a third-party certification body, the British Standards Institution (BSI), a UK inspection, verification, testing and certification organisation.
