Radic: industry associations may improve supply practices. Radic: industry associations may improve supply practices.

Le Meridien Al Aqah executive housekeeper Mira Radic hopes to establish a Fujairah-based executive housekeepers association to boost quality and efficiency in the industry.

With a number of new hotels — including Radisson and Fairmont — scheduled to open in Fujairah in the near future, Radic believes the community is large enough to support its own branch.

“There is an executive housekeepers association in Dubai, however for the executive housekeepers in Fujairah, it’s quite a distance to travel and sometimes we feel left behind,” she said.

Radic explained that a dedicated association may attract more suppliers to the region.

“The major challenge I have seen here in Fujairah is how to get supplies on time,” she said.

“You have to managed, regardless of whether you get something or not — the guest doesn’t care [if it is the supplier’s fault].”

She said that the new economic climate could prompt a clean-up of the industry, with only the most organised and professional suppliers able to weather the storm.

Radic also hoped to encourage more environmentally-friendly practices in the region’s hotels.

“I have not seen much introduction of environmentally-friendly chemicals, which have been around for quite some time in other parts of the world,” she commented.

“Hotels are major consumers, so I think we could contribute a lot by bringing this awareness and encouraging suppliers to come up with environmentally-friendly products.”
