Young chefs in the Middle East need more opportunities to develop their skills through competitive events, according to one industry professional.

Nestlé Professional advisory chef Zain Sidhu commented: “At a junior chef level there are very few competition opportunities; this is changing, but there is still a lot of work to be done to improve the standard.”

Speaking at the Female Chef of the Year 2009, organised by Nestlé, Sidhu — one of the event judges — said it was invaluable to junior female chefs in the region. “Success here can elevate their confidence and will give them a big boost to further develop themselves for other competitions,” he added.

Open to female chefs of chef de partie level or lower, the event was held at the International Centre for Culinary Arts in Satwa, Dubai.

Maryam Darwesh, demi chef de partie at The Westin Dubai’s Blue Orange restaurant, beat off stiff competition to take home the title.

“I’ve learnt a lot of new things,” she said. “It’s definitely been a very valuable experience.”
