The Laundry Manager of the Year title was given to T Chandran Thanggaraja of the Park Rotana Abu Dhabi at the Hotelier Middle East Awards 2011 ceremony last night.

The accolade, sponsored by Diversey Gulf, was awarded to Thanggaraja for his numerous cost-saving initiatives, from reducing chemical consumption to manually working alongside his team to fold bed linens during peak periods, saving tens of thousands of dirhams.

When he collected the award, Chandran said: "I’ve been in this industry for 17 years and it’s been very challenging recently. Every year I not only try to generate revenue for the hotel, sometimes I’m saving the costs in terms of ordering daily supplies such as chemicals. I ensure there’s proper consumption."

"I take my people out on a monthly basis and celebrate their birthdays unfailingly. Even if it’s three to four birthdays a week – it’s recognition for them, they’re abroad and without their families here so I’m their parent and I take care of them," he explained.

Highly commended in this category was Mohammed Saidul Islam Belal from the Hotel InterContinental Riyadh.
