The Cove Rotana Resort – Ras Al Khaimah has strengthened its commitment to the environment by acquiring a machine to decompose food waste.

The liquid food composter helps fulfill the property's environmental goals by preventing food from being sent to landfills.

“When food waste is discarded in a landfill, it produces methane, a harmful gas which is 72 times worse for the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

“The outcome is direct impact on global warming as most of the garbage sent to landfills is waste food,” said Andreas Mueller, general manager, The Cove Rotana Resort.

“The waste food we dispose has a large effect on our carbon footprint, and we needed to solve the problem. This machine will help our operation become cleaner, as well as save the environment.

“On-site composting also puts an end to the problem of dumpsters that leak liquids attracting insects, rodents and other animals.

“The food waste goes into the system immediately without being stored outside waiting for collection, turning food waste into grey water that goes down the drain, gets filtered in our water system and becomes enriching to our hotel landscape, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and the production of harmful gases,” added Andreas

The liquid food composter is installed in the hotel wet garbage room and has a capacity of 270 kg of daily food waste input, which accelerates the digestion of most food products and bio-plastics within 24 hours.

The process is totally green because it does not make use of any chemicals.

The machine accurately weighs the amount of waste food and produces composting data per hour, day, week, month and year, including the amount of CO2 diverted from the landfill during these periods.

In an effort to be more environmentally-friendly, The Cove Rotana Resort has implemented several initiatives, such as recycling and segregating, conserving energy to reduce carbon emissions and eliminating paper waste.

In June Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi launched the first food composting machine within the Rotana Group and Abu Dhabi.
