Oryx Rotana Doha hosted a 'blindfold dinner' on October 12, in association with Orbis UK, aimed at supporting people with visual disabilities.
Blindfolds and aprons were distributed to all guests, after which ushers and volunteers guided them to their seats where dinner was served in the dark.
Oryx Rotana Doha director of marketing and communications Lana Jwainat said in a statement: “We are happy to host the blindfold dinner for the fourth consecutive time, and we consider this as a great opportunity to support people with visual disabilities.”
“Oryx Rotana has always been keen on supporting Orbis charitable foundation, and we are privileged to partner with this international institution to contribute to the prevention of blindness initiatives that fall under our corporate social responsibility.
"Moreover, through the blindfold dinner, we aim to let our attendees and members of the local community to realise the importance of the gift of sight and the efforts taken by the organisation in order to provide the means to reduce the likelihood of vision loss and treatment of those in need for it," she added.
Orbis and the Qatar Creating Vision initiative head of partnerships in the Middle East Florence Branchu said: “285 million people in the world are blind or visually impaired. Yet 80% can be avoided or cured. Qatar Creating Vision is a new initiative, funded by the Qatar Fund for Development and implemented by Orbis. This truly remarkable philanthropic initiative is bringing together governments, charities, business and hospitals to deliver 5.5 million eye tests and treatments to children in India and Bangladesh before 2020."
